The red rock cliffs along this trail are one of the better ones in the park. We enjoyed viewing (and slightly climbing) the massive red cliffs, exploring the many washes, and viewing the impressive canyons. This trail is packed with wonderful surprises! Hagen Trail – 1.2 mile loopĭon’t let the short length of this trail deter you from this hike. There are a few different hikes located within the park. Now we feel the best way to experience this park is hiking through it. To our surprise, there was also a little tortoise habitat just outside! The unique landscape that makes up Red Rock Canyon State Park has attracted many filmmakers over the years. Over time, small streams and rivers have carved the canyon into what we now see today. The unique red coloring you see is from an iron oxide (rust) staining the rocks. These layers originally resided in an old inland lake millions of years ago and have been lifted by the El Paso, Garlock, and Sierra Frontal Faults. The park lends itself quite well to some explorative off-trail improvisation if we say so ourselves. The best part about these trails is wandering off a bit (shh, don’t tell anyone we told you) and getting up close and exploring the spectacular rock formations. Other trails, such as the Red Cliffs Trail, offer fantastic insight into the geological history and normal topography of the desert, and these hikes permit an on-the-ground perspective towards the towering and colorful sandstone formations that amaze everyone who walks in their shadows. With options like the 1.1 mile Hagen Trail, whose short length should not discredit it’s awesome nature with pit stops for caves and even stone “windows,” Red Rock Canyon offers great hikes for even begginner trekkers. Hiking in the desert may have its drawbacks (that little thing we call the sun), but utilizing the trails in Red Rock Canyon State Park is an awesome way to get up close and personal with the magnificent Bryce Canyon-like dramatic cliffs.
